FIRST LOOK: VA Hampton Roads Community Outpatient Clinic

To meet the needs of one of the fastest growing veteran populations in the nation, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is adding a new outpatient clinic to the Hampton VA Health System in Hampton Roads, Virginia.

Partnership with the developer The Molasky Group of Companies (Las Vegas) Gresham-Smith (Charlotte, NC) provides planning, architectural, and interior design services to create a human-centered space that uses the latest technologies to improve quality of care.

Located on a 25-acre site on the Chesapeake Regional Medical Center campus in Chesapeake, Va., near Cypress Landing veterans housing, the new facility will reflect the surrounding region, drawing on coastal culture to honor Hampton Roads as home to the largest naval base in the world.

Outside, a large linear expanse of glazing will mimic the shape of an aircraft carrier, while the covered landing area at the front of the building will resemble ship masts.

To promote wellness and connect patients, visitors and staff to nature, the design will capitalize on the site’s existing wetlands to create outdoor seating and respite areas, as well as a healing garden in a park-like setting.

Staff will also have access to a dedicated outdoor space and several balconies to rest during breaks.

Inside, the interiors palette will use cool earth tones including blues, greens and grays, as well as wooden cladding on the ceilings and in the elevators throughout the design. Floor-to-ceiling fenestration in the main hall, combined with large windows on all sides of the building, will flood the space with natural light.

The 205,000-square-foot, two-story building will house primary care, audiology and speech-language pathology, mental health, ophthalmology, prosthetic and sensory assistance, laboratory and pharmacy services, as well as CT, X-ray, Mammography, MRI, and Ultrasound technologies.

To increase operational efficiency and promote personalized care, patient care spaces will be set up around central staff work areas in each clinic, in line with the patient-aligned care team care delivery model ( PACT) from VA.

Construction is expected to begin in late 2022 with the facility expected to open in fall 2024.
