New Cancer Clinic at OSF St. Francis Hospital and Medical Group in Escanaba | WJMN

ESCANABA, Mich. (WJMN) — Escanaba will soon have a new cancer clinic on the grounds of OSF St. Francis Hospital. The groundbreaking ceremony for the future Daniel J. Kobasic Cancer Clinic was held Friday on the campus of St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba.

The clinic will be housed in a separate facility that once housed the hospital’s dialysis center. The new cancer clinic will expand the capacity of oncology departments and provide more space to treat more patients.

The clinic was made possible by a federal grant of $1.5 million and a major gift from the Daniel J. Kobasic Foundation. Kobasic, was a local entrepreneur and cancer patient in St. Francis. After his death, the foundation bearing his name was established for charitable causes.

“Shortly before he [Kobasic] passed away, he was hospitalized here in St. Francis and the care he received was wonderful,” said Todd LaFave of the Daniel J. Kobasic Foundation. “When Saint Francis let us know it was something they wanted, it seemed like a perfect fit as long as we can make sure everything falls into place.”

“We have many partners coming into the market to help us care for critically ill patients like cancer patients,” said Kelly Jefferson, president of OSF St. Francis Hospital and Medical Group. “Especially with cancer care, a lot of tension and a lot of treatment that you have to have, so it’s very important to have that care near you and to have that care
right here in Delta County, being able to care for our community members is so essential.

Construction of the new clinic is expected to begin by the end of the year.
