A Manhattan woman sexually assaulted by a doctor during a breast cancer screening is suing the doctor and the Harlem clinic where she was assaulted, saying the company knew he assaulted others before her.
Kim Lewis, 58, was attacked by Mark H. Jackson, 62, during an appointment on September 15, 2017 in which he barricaded the exam room door with a chair to keep a nurse away .
Jackson was arrested about a year after Lewis’ attack, and two more victims later came forward, according to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. Jackson pleaded guilty in November 2019 to charges of rape and forcible touching and was sentenced to two years in prison and 10 years of post-release supervision.
The doctor already had a checkered past when he came to Start Treatment & Recovery Centers, which operated the West 124th Street clinic where Lewis was attacked, she said in a Manhattan Supreme Court lawsuit.
Jackson, who was forced to register as a sex offender after his guilty plea, had lost his medical license in 1997 after being convicted of a drug charge, but filed for reinstatement in December 2000 and was been placed on probation, according to the court. papers. Start Treatment was told that Jackson had previously had incidents of “inappropriately touching other patients,” Lewis charges in the legal filing.
“Although this facility was meant to be a safe space for Ms Lewis and other patients seeking treatment there, it was anything but,’ Lewis’ attorney Ellie Silverman said.
Start Recovery did not return a message. Jackson could not be reached.
