Democratic women’s meeting offers viewing of lynching films

The short film about a long-forgotten lynching of four black youths in the Parker County Courthouse Plaza in 1864 will be screened at the Parker County Texas Women’s Democrat meeting on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 2 p.m. in Mount Pleasant School, 213 Raymond George Road in Weatherford.

Representatives from the Parker County Peace Coalition will offer tours of the restored school after the film. The building was the only public school for black students in the city until the 1960s. The PCTDW business meeting will follow the screening. Visitors are welcome.

Active Democrats to hear from board of education and appeals court nominees

Candidates for the State Board of Education and 2nd Court of Appeals in the Nov. 8 general election will speak at the Parker County Active Democrats meeting Monday, Oct. 10 at 6:30 p.m. at Weatherford College.

Luis Miguel Sifuentes, a former teacher and human resources professional, is the Democratic nominee for SBOE in District 11. Delonia Watson, an attorney with three decades of experience defending appeals, is the Democratic nominee for Justice, 2nd Court of call, Place 3 .

Fish fry to benefit Backpack Buddies

A drive-thru set of fish fries for October 14 at Mineral Wells will help feed much more than diners who drive.

Held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the parking lot of First United Methodist Church, 301 NE First St., the event benefits Backpack Buddies, a nonprofit ministry that sends children from Mineral Wells on their weekend of three days with a menu of nutritious meals.

“Backpack Buddies is absolutely essential to us at Mineral Wells,” Superintendent John Kuhn said. “I understand that all the money they collect buys the food.”

Meals are $20 for adults, $15 for children, and include fish, taters, hushpuppies, coleslaw, beans, and dessert.

Drive-Through Flu Vaccination Clinic

The Holland Lake Rehabilitation and Wellness Center will host the 9th Annual Drive-Through Flu Vaccination Clinic from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on October 13.

Shots are free with a minimum of one canned food donation per person. Items will benefit local food banks, with cash contributions also accepted.

Tailgaters BBW will provide sausage cookies for breakfast from 7am-9am, hot dog lunch will be served from 11am-1pm, live radio from 3pm-5pm, and popcorn and drinks from 4pm-6pm or while supplies last.

Parker County Quilters Guild

The Parker County Quilters Guild will meet in person and via Zoom on Oct. 20 at the Lakeshore Drive Baptist Church, 200 S. Lakeshore Dr. in Hudson Oaks. The meeting will start at 6:45 p.m., but come earlier to socialize. Visitors are welcome in person and online. This month’s program will be speaker J. Michelle Watts, talking about the beauty of the Southwest. She will present a lecture and trunk exhibit with many quilts and wearable art inspired by Southwestern, Native American, Spanish, Hispanic, and Anglo-Saxon cultures. As an artist and quilt designer, she strives to create quilts that express her passion and style. There will also be a workshop on October 21 called Wheel of Scraps.
