Volleyball takes 3-0 win to start Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge series

Kent, Ohio- Kent State recorded a .402 hit percentage in a dominating victory over arch-rival Akron, 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-19) in a Crystal Clinic Cart Wheel Challenge contest Friday night at the MAC Center.

The Golden Flashes (12-6, 3-4 MAC) were led by a quartet of pin hitters who combined for 43 kills and a .455 hit percentage. First-year student Mackenzie McGuire posted a team record 13 eliminations and senior Savannah Matthews was right behind with 12. Freshman Mia Soerensen was unstoppable on the right side, hitting .647 with 11 kills. Senior Taylor Heberle added seven kills on nine swings for a .778 hit percentage.

Graduate student Alex Haffner and second Kiersten Kraus timeshare orchestrating the attack. Haffner finished with 24 assists and Kraus had 12 assists and a pair of kills.

Graduate student Erin Gardner paced the defense with eight digs and Kraus was right behind with seven.

Matthews, who finished with six digs, scored the 1,000th of his career in the opening set. The outside hitter is now Kent State’s sixth all-time player to total 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs.

Kent State is aiming for its third straight sweep of the season and seventh overall victory against rival Akron on Saturday when the teams face off at 4 p.m. at the MAC Center.
