Woman punched cops, threw raccoon corpse and eggs into abortion clinic: police

Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio police say a woman threw eggs and a dead raccoon outside the Northeast Ohio Women’s Center and then punched officers when they pulled her over. had found.

Dr. David Burkons, the owner of the clinic, filed the report on the August 15 incident, according to the police report obtained by Newsweek.

Police have identified the alleged assailant as Melissa Strelec, who has been charged with criminal mischief and littering. The Akron Beacon Log reported that a felony assault charge was tied to the Summit County Court of Common Pleas.

According to its website, the Northeast Ohio Women’s Center offers pregnant women a medical abortion — the abortion pill given up to two weeks after a missed period — or a surgical abortion — given up to two weeks after a missed period.

After the United States Supreme Court voted to strike down Roe vs. Wade in the case Dobbs vs. Jackson The Women’s Health Organization in June, Ohio, imposed its 6-week PPL abortion ban, the Center for Reproductive Rights said.

“Pregnant women who seek abortion care must endure a mandatory 24-hour waiting period and biased counseling,” the organization said. “The state bans telemedicine for medical abortion, but this law is temporarily banned.”

Harassment and violence against reproductive health care providers is nothing new, however, and the United States Department of Justice has shared many such cases.

For example, a defendant pleaded guilty to a violation of the FACE Act and other state criminal offenses in 2021 after throwing a Molotov cocktail at an abortion clinic in Fort Byers, Florida.

“David Burkons, the owner of the Northeast Ohio Women’s Center, reported that a woman entered the parking lot and threw eggs at the building, along with the egg carton, then left” , says the police report. “Soon after, the female came back and dumped a dead raccoon in front of the business entrance.”

Police identified Strelec as the suspect, but when they contacted her she “became enraged and punched the officers repeatedly”.

Security footage obtained by the Akron Beacon Journal shows a car pulling into the parking lot before the driver began throwing eggs at the building.

Several volunteers approached the car and attempted to use umbrellas as a shield before the car reversed and drove away.

The outlet reported that clinic workers said Strelec returned about an hour later, carrying a bag containing the raccoon. She threw him out the door and left the area.

Dr. Burkons told the Akron Beacon Journal that he had never experienced this type of incident before.

“There’s a little more anger now because they assumed we’d be closing, and we’re not,” he said.

Newsweek contacted the Northeast Ohio Women’s Center for comment and the Cuyahoga Falls Police Department for additional comment.

Abortion clinics in Illinois reported receiving a number of out-of-state patients following the reversal of Roe v. Wade. A California doctor said she planned to offer abortions at a “floating clinic” to circumvent state bans.
